10 UNDERRATED/FLOP FILMS THAT ARE A MUST WATCH
These are 10 films from the recent times which were ignored at the theatres and then found cult status later. Some films werent even given a chance to make a point because it was tormented by negative reviews. Here is the list of the underrated or flop movies which should be seen for all the different reasons
There are no suprises here. The cult classic which has defined our generation. Its unbelievable that AAA flopped at the box office but was later rediscovered after a generation shift. Releasing the film with 'Hum aap k hai Kaun' became the major reason people ignored this gem but now this Raj kumar santoshi film is the baap of all comedies
Before Zoya Akhtar sold her soul to commercial films in 'Zindagi milegi na dobara' she debuted with this awesome film which makes you feel that you are in a movie. Real characters, super screenplay and rishi kapoor makes this film unforgettable. The dry marketing was the reason this film bombed but is now considered a bible for film based movies. Its sad that Zoya will always take revenge from the audiences for not seeing this film by bombarding us with crappy cinema now
3. Gulaal
Long before Anurag Kashyap was rediscovered, he made 2 films - Gulaal & No Smoking. While 'No Smoking' vanished without a trace, Gulaal lied in the cans for many years before Dev D made Kashyap a superhero. Gulaal has achieved a cult following for dark cinema lovers. Except for the forced climax, Gulaal is one helluva ride and watch out for Abhimanyu Singh (Ransa) in the film.
4. One Two Three
Like Andaz Apna Apna, One Two Three has been underrated for many years before people recognised the hilarious film. Lack of face value made the theatres go empty when this film released, but you have to see it, to believe it that even Sunil Shetty can make you laugh
5. Gunda
Sometimes a film is so bad that it is good. Gunda came at a time Mithun had become the Bachchan of the masses, but the film was so bad that even the masses were stumped on the films content. Now, Gunda is showcased in film institutes to teach students what not to do while you make a film. Shody editing, bad acting, hilarious rapes, amazing deaths .. Ohh this film has everythin you need to love your average bad films.
6. Awarapan
Before Mohit Suri cheated people of their money in Aashiqui 2, he used to rip off every good korean film you see. Awarapan is the rare film which is better than the original korean film 'A Bittersweet Life'. Heart wrenching music and Emraan Hashmi's most honest performance til date makes Awarapan a must watch
7. Dil Dosti Etc
Saw this film on VCD in my college and was blown away by its content. The college assholes in a multicultural set up is very relatable. Dil Dosti Etc later became a DVD cult in Boys hostels. The director Manish Tiwary later made 'Issaq' and made the mess of his credibility. Watch out for the climax which will make you doubt the intentions of your best friends.
8. London Dreams
So many people hated this film but wenever you see London Dreams, there is something in it which makes you feel its a good film made in the wrong era. If this film was made in the early part of salman and ajay devgns career, then things could have been different. The biggest reason for its bombing was the casting. Ajay devgn doesnt even look like a koli band member forget rockstar. But still, the complicated relation between 2 friends and jealousy in between, is beautifully potrait in this Vipul shah dud film.
9. Saawariya
Ok, so i know many people will cruicfy me for listing Saawariya. But ask yourself, how many people have seen this film. The film released with Om shanti Om and was crushed under negative reviews from a handful of people. Yes Saawariya has no story, no plot, nothing great but forget story and watch the granduer of the film. Its bhansali's most imaginative work where he recreates an entire world for his 2 characters. But i guess the director's ego of making the film without a story made this film bomb big time. See the movie and realise the pain staking hardwork the technical team has put in.
10. Swades
After Lagaan, a lot was expected from Ashutosh Gowarikar, then he made Swades. Honestly, i slept in the theatre when i first watched the movie. But graually with age i understood the maturity of the film. Rated in IMDB's top 250, Swades bombed at its release and made SRK make crap commercial films later. Watch Swades only when you have a pitcher of coffee next to you or if you seriously need to sleep cause it is slow but once you make peace with its pace, you wont be disappointed
HONORABLE MENTIONS
*Rockstar
*Kaminey
*Ek Chalis ki Last Local
*Pyar ka Punchnama
These 4 films reached a wider audience, hence couldn't make it to the top 10. But they have to be watched, if you havent seen it already.
